[Vwdiesel] dropping engine - order of mount removal?

I connect the sling to the Engine pick points on the Head. Just about
directly above Injector #3 will pick the Engine and Transmission level. I
remove the Radiator, Alternator and Belts and Pulleys but not the Timing
Belt, this gives you more room on that end of the Engine. First completely
remove the rear Transmission Mount, hook up the Engine Crane and take the
weight off the mounts, remove the Front Mount, raise the Crane enough to
take the Bolts out of the Left and Right Mounts.

I start by tilting the Engine and Transmission till the Transmission Mount
drops out, lift a little till the Passenger side lifts out of the Mount on
the Frame and then lift a little and tilt till the you can pull the Intake
Manifold clear of the firewall and then tilt it till you can pull the
Transmission end ahead of the Battery Tray and lift. When the Transmission
end is clear of the Battery Tray you can start to level Engine and
Transmission. When its clear of everything I level it and lift it out over
the Radiator Support and pull it clear of the Car.

Hope this help, If I can help let me know and I'll respond in Private Mail.

Rudy

I've only had to drop a couple engines down and out in my Rabbits. Jacking
the car up onto stands is a royal PITA.

Son somehow introduced one of his Rabbit's rod ends to the world outside the
block, so I'm looking at doing an engine R&R with him soon.

I've never seen discussion of any detail as to how to go about pulling out
the top. Would you describe in more detail your experience with doing it
backasswards? <grin>

I'm assuming you yank engine, bolt ons, and tranny together? Perhaps also
with the intake and exhaust down to that PITA tailpipe clamp still on?

Does your sling's auger tilt side to side like mine does?

Which end of the engine do you tilt lower as you entice the engine & tranny
up and out?

In the process do you find yourself needing to significantly tilt in the
other axis (fore & aft)?

How tight a fit while coming out/going in? Do you find yourself pulling any
other engine compartment obstructions?

What say other's here?

I lurk here a lot and have learned a bunch.
Amongst the many pearls I've gleaned here was the PDF file on the IP reseal
with great pictures.
Made me reconsider the intimidation factor. I'll attempt a full IP reseal
myself 'cause it doesn't look any worse than rebuilding some carburetors
I've had apart.

Great group, dedicated knowledgeable members, gentlemen all around.
