The engine may be fine. Do a compression check first to see if it is worn out. If it is you can rebuild yourself for a much cheaper cost. Parts Place (look on line) can sell you long and short blocks and also the parts to do it all your self for cheaper. I imagine a 1.9 will fit in your car as it fit in my 81 rabbit car (1.9 aaz turbo diesel engine). You can even fit a 1.9 TDI if you had the money and time. The aaz engine didn't take to much work to make it fit in my car. Just the motor mounts (passenger side was from a gasser, belt cover from old engine, front motor moount from old engine, tranny bolted right up).
