You don't need to pull the crank to get to the seals. You need to pull the crank gear to get to on and you need to pull the clutch to get to the others. If the main bearings are good visually and in spec wear wise then there isn't a need to replace. It is up to you at that point. One thing it that could happen is your oil pressure would be lost some do to bad bearings. But the main bearings are almost always good as the have oil splashing on them all the time along with oil being pumped to them. I would check and replace your intermediate shaft bearings though. You need to pull one frost plug, pulley and bearing cap. Then you need to press out the bearing and press new ones in. They are different sizes so get the correct side it and don't force it (as it may be wrong side). Replace all seals while it is out of the car. If the oil pan gasket is getting replaced and is cork then retorque after about 15 minutes and then one more time before attaching back to the tranny (or it will leak). I don't think you can get the pistons out the bottom if I remember correct as the place where the main bearings attach into the block it isn't wide enough (found out the hard way). Just go out the top. Take the sand paper or a honer or an edger (can't remember the name, but there is a tool for removing the carbon bit at the end of a cylinder). Check all your rings. Take them all of and put in the cylinder to check the ring gaps. If all that is good You may have bad seals on your valves that is allowing it to burn oil. Get those seals replaced anyways and reshim your cam lifters. New seals will help this engine stay clean much longer as all the diesels seem to get so slimmy after a while with oil. Hope that helps as that is kind of how I did one of my enignes.
