[Vwdiesel] Value of 1.6 TD engine

I posted a feeler here a while back (and X-posted to a couple other  
lists) about the resale value of my '84 Quantum TD wagon. I wound up  
selling it a few days ago to a guy one of the other lists, but then I  
had an interesting conversation yesterday.

A small independent VW-Audi garage has just opened on my block in  
Seattle. (Yes, I live on a mixed-use residential-commercial block.) I  
was telling the owner about how I had just sold the Quantum, and he  
said he'd seen it parked on the street. When I told him what I sold  
it for, he said, "I wish you'd talked to me first." He went on to say  
that I could probably have gotten $1200 for the engine, which would  
have been more than I got for the entire car. I actually parted out a  
'68 Saab 96 V4 in '91, but there were reasons why the parting-out  
angle occurred to me then but not now.

Of course it's water under the bridge now, but out of curiosity,  
would the engine really have been worth that much, or close to?
