[Vwdiesel] More Jetta & Quantum Questions?

Haven't touched the Quantum recently but have been attempting to get the '80 Dasher parts car started. However the Dasher turns over to slowly to start. It is parked next to the '86 Jetta & am using its battery as the jumper cable source. While I was at it, I decided to see if the Jetta would start, assuming it wouldn't. BUT it DID! Pulled the start cable out, it then started & ran fine! When I pushed the start cable in, the engine died. I suspect the timing is off & who ever worked on it  didn't know what they were doing. After working on the Quantum, I would assume I time the Jetta NA diesel the same way. If not, let me know.

While I am at it, the '86 Jetta has no turbo but the Jetta's IP looks a little different.  What are the differences enginewise between my '86 Jetta, '82 Quantum TD, & '80 & '81 Dasher diesels. I believe the '80 & '81s are 1.5 engines whereas the '82 TD's  & '86 Jetta's are 1.6. Although I bought the Jetta at a parts car price, I plan to fix it up. Just haven't given it much attention as I have given my Quantum priority.
