This discussion reminds me of something I have never tried but have wondered about. If you need a thicker gasket than a 3 notch gasket, could you use two one notch gaskets? Would that lower the compression to much or would two gaskets sandwiched together blow out. How would someone get the equilivant of a 4 notch or 5 notch gasket or when it reaches that point is the answer to that head "forget it & throw it away? I could also see where grinding a bit off the valve stem might accomplish the same thing. That was the way that Henry Ford had for adjusting the valves on a Model A & flathead V-8s, as I understand.
The discussion of DYI head surfacing was interesting. Could save a trip (and money to the local machine shop.
