Guessing by "4 notch" and "5 notch" gaskets you're referring to the old
1.5D head gasket specs?
The 1.5s had 1-5 notch gaskets, while the 1.6 only has 1-3 notch
gaskets. It can get confusing, but a 3 notch 1.5 gasket is a 1-notch 1.6
gasket.
A 4 notch (1.5) is a 2 notch (1.6).
A 5 notch (1.5) is a 3 notch (1.6)
So to get a 4 or 5 you'd need a 2 or 3 notch 1.6 gasket.
Stacking head gaskets on diesels is asking for bad news. If your pistons
protrude so much above your block deck that you're outside the normal
gasket thicknesses, pull them out and go get them shaved down to match
your block deck (which has surely been shaved in the past if you're that
low)

Would that lower the compression to much or would two gaskets sandwiched together blow out. How would someone get the equilivant of a 4 notch or 5 notch gasket or when it reaches that point is the answer to that head "forget it & throw it away? I could also see where grinding a bit off the valve stem might accomplish the same thing. That was the way that Henry Ford had for adjusting the valves on a Model A & flathead V-8s, as I understand.
