[Vwdiesel] injector problems

I believe it's mainly just time and the immense pressures - the fluid
itself in going through the injector eventually wears it away, much
like water can wear a channel through rock if given enough time.

If you have contaminants in your fuel that can be accelerated, of course.

Rebuilding injectors mainly involves replacing the actual nozzle and
nozzle seat, which is very easy, and then possibly setting the opening
pressure using shims, which takes a pressure tester to properly do.
(Although it seems that they will often be fine without changing out
any shims.) And finally making sure that the sealing surfaces are
perfectly flat so that the two halves of the injector body can make a
seal and the injector won't leak. This was the hard part for me. I
finally decided that it wasn't worth the effort after I spent quite a
bit of time on different weekends pulling the injectors out of the
vehicle quite a few times and redid the sealing portions over and
over. It was before a large trip and I finally gave up and went
anyway, and then 1000 miles into the trip they sealed themselves up
and haven't leaked since. (~30k? ago) I still don't understand that
one.

So it's definitely possible, but I've come to the conclusion that I'd
rather fork out the extra $80 or so and get them redone by a pro. It
just didn't work out for me.
