That's pretty much what I do. I always used to have a can of Diesel
around because that's what my ancestors always used. Being in the
environmental industry, I try to limit the amount of solvents I keep
around. I wipe CV components really clean with a few paper towels and
then use a solvent-soaked paper towel to give a final wipe down. Some
stuff, yeah, best done in a tank, but CV grease is usually pretty soft
and easy to clean up. Big parts are (at least used to be) cheap to get
cleaned at a rebuild shop.

Random question: anyone ever deal with one of the biological parts
washers? They use warm water, a detergent, and a microbial consortium
to wash then break down greases/oils. Supposedly pretty effective, but
I don't wash anywhere near enough parts to bother. As a microbiologist,
I always thought that that's a pretty neat idea.
