They changed them to "normal" glow plugs I'm pretty sure. Haven't
looked at the 300 for a long time but Dad's 70 220D was as you
described.
I'd pop the air filter, change the fuel filters (there's a spin on one
about half the size of a VW one and an inline one half again bigger
than a typical air cooled bug type. The inline ones plug pretty
easily if you have crap in the tank like algae or used fryer oil.
Make sure it cranks over fast enough and the glow plugs work,
simply disconnecting the GP's and using a 12V test light between
battery + and the connection threads of the GP should suffice.
Lights? then it's good.
I wouldn't go cracking the system checking for fuel flow just yet
plus you don't have to crank to check fuel flow as there's a knob on
the pump that is a hand pump/primer.
"Clogged" injectors on one are usually carbon bits in the spray holes,
(they have cross drilled holes in the tip of the injectors unlike the
IDI VW's). They'll contribute to a poor idle but usually not to a
no-start issue. The filters clog up long before crap could break its
way through from what I've seen.
