? Sounds like you should be able to see quite a few bubbles coming
through the clear (now brown, mostlikely) fuel line.? You may need
to hold a light behind it while the car is running, to see them.? It'd
take a pretty heavy stream of bubbles to cause it to hard start right
away but that?IS what it sounds like.? That bad of an air leak can
also come from the return side so don't necessarily rule hoses and
connections on that side out just yet.? The input shaft seal can easily
do this too but wasn't that replaced?
? Unlikely any problems with the pump could cause this other than
missing or bad seals, copper washers, etc.

No big deal about the heat shields.? If you have them to replace when you have injectors out, good, but like you said, in your case that is not the issue, nor is the return fuel lines.? Yes, you should always replace the heat shields, as the book says so next time replace them.? 52 ft. lbs. is most important when putting them back in along with some anti-seeze, but not to much and none below the threads. Does this car have a clear plastic or yellowed fuel line to IP.? Does it show excessive bubbles?? That would cause this hard starting but I think if it were that bad it would cause?rough running at idle as well. Could be something internal in the pump, but not sure as I am a not a pump expert. New glow plugs checked & installed. Quantum still does not start any better than before, but with new fresh battery, it turns over rapidly & eventually does start. Once it catches, it starts right off & runs nicely. It acts like it is not getting fuel.? Makes no difference if I start it right after stopping or wait a while, engine hot or cold. I did replace the return hoses, except for one & plan to replace that one too but I still think the problem is elsewhere, probably with the IP. I didn't replace the "heat shield" yet but used the old ones but new ones are on order at our local Grass Valley foreign car parts house. I notice the Quantum does NOT smoke when I "POUR THE COAL" to it although it did smoke a bit earlier as I recall.
