[Vwdiesel] snap ring on drive shaft

Maybe the groove has been physically damaged.  I accidentally did that once removing a wheel bearing.  (!)  I was like, "Why won't this freakin' bearing come out?" as I cranked down on the bearing tool assuming it was just really tight.  Then a loud snap as the groove broke free and the bearing popped out.  I got to buy a knuckle from a salvage yard a couple days later.
