I never checked the mix in a glass container, but I always shake my little old oil can before applying the mix to a rusty nut/bolt. The idea is the acetone is a very viscous carrier that will take a bit of the also very viscous ATF into the tightest place, and corrosion usually is somewhat porous. The ATF I've used has been the Dextron type.

I saw the recent post regarding the use of a 50/50 mix of Acetone and ATF
for penetrating oil. I got some acetone and some Dextron 3 ATF and tried a
50/50 mix in a glass jar. They don't mix. More separation than oil and
water. Shaken thorougly and set overnight they are completely separated
stratified layers. Is that the way it's supposed to go? Did I use the
wrong ATF?
