Didn't remove the fender, but it is quite a bit tighter in the engine compartment in a new beetle than a golf or jetta. The main problem is that the cowl covers more of the engine, and things like the power steering res are even more in the way. Though the cowl was really only an issue because we were also doing a manifold cleaning at the same time.
Simply put, the procedure is similar, but more difficult just because the whole thing is tighter. Required more jacking of the engine up/down to get to roller bolts because of the car's frame.
