I don't know if the state the gal is staying is uses ethanol but that shortens the lift of fuel even more even with additive. We had some in some of our JD tractors and the fuel was black in one year and gummed up every part of the fuel system. It is worse in humid areas of the country as it sucks the water out of the air and causes rust in the fuel system as well. Not good for ANY carburetor operated machine. Not the best for a lot of fuel injection ones either. Make sure no matter the car if one is bought and left unused (diesel or gas) that the fuel is treated. It should be blocked up so the tires done get flat spots with that amount of time between and the tires no in sunlight. Moth balls throughout the car to prevent rodents from living in it. Oil changes before every start up period. I really don't think it would be worth the hazzle of buying and storing a car. A 10X20 storage unit (which the doors are hardly wide enough for my rabbits when I was in one) is $75 a month around here. Then you have the oil changes and other maintenance in the year and I don't know how long the tires will last before the dry rotting begins as I doubt they would ever wear out. The fuel filters (gas or diesel) every start up period. Maybe there would be a way to work a time share or something or if she is a really good friend and you have the room maybe either you could by it and she rents it from you and it could be a spare car that you rotated in your usage like I do. I have 3 cars. The 04 Golf since the bank still owns some has to stay insured but the rabbits are insured every other month. So one sits a month and the other is driven. Then I swap. That way the fuel gets fresh and the tires are wasted by dry rotting away with age rather then actual wear. That saves insurance costs as well and can get you out of bind and any issues can be fixed before she shows back up. But she will still be out the insurance cost, taxes to buy it and the tabs every year as well. I see her breaking even with the rental at best. How many miles does she drive in that time she is here.
