Other than normal maintenance and wear items(and nonessentials such as the
crappy lock-position dipswitches, which I still haven't fixed... and
warranty/recall crap like the window regulators), the only thing I can think
of that's required service on my 01 Golf w/164k miles, since new, is the
alternator (stupid plastic pulley broke) and once I had a fuel system air
leak that left me with a no-start and required professional assistance-
turned out to be the plastic "T" fitting in the top of the fuel filter had
cracked.
Oh... and the sunroof drains. Make sure you clear those from time to time
(if you have a sunroof that is).
What problems have you had other than the alternator and the subsequent
fixing of the shop's mistakes? Exhaust systems do disintegrate over time,
especially when exposed to salt.
Sounds to me that your problem is more lack of competent service than the
car per se. Of course availability of competent service is related to the
type (and commonality) of the car...
