Brian:
That is a possible method, however, a few of us have discovered that
installing a five speed in a Dasher or early Audi Fox like that can put
undue strain on parts further up in the car, including the axles. The
first conversion I took part in was one such creature; the axles were at
an odd angle because of the spacer added to keep from having to dent the
floor, and it was steadily eating it's way through it's third CV joint.
I personally would just much rather cut and weld instead of messing with
tilting and angling the engine against it's mounts. Even better would be
if JG can get the bronze bushings made up for 4 speeds, then I don't
have to cut anything at all, I'll just put a PW in it and call it done.
The VW Fox floor pan needs no modifications at all to house a five
speed, so my 2N would drop right in, and it would gladly give up it's
transmission to put the Dasher back on the road. At least, that's the
way I feel about it. ;) A 1.5 in a Fox isn't a bad combo either, just a
PITA to get AC and alternator working well. With the 1.5 going into the
Dasher, I'm seriously considering jumping ship and finding a Suzuki G10T
to put in the Fox... Three cylinders, 1L, turbocharged. :D
