Hi Kurt;
I like the response and willingness to rev of the 1.5 VW diesel over
the 1.6. I have the short block setting here ready for putting together a
1.5 turboed and intercooled engine in my 1981 VW diesel pickup. With an FF
tranny and the tallest tires I can fit I will have my highway revs down
nicely. In the VW pickup which weighs just over 2000 lbs the 1.5 with turbo
and intercooler should produce decent acceleration and still be able to get
50 mpg or close to it when driven sanely.
I too like Foxes. I have had two or three Fox Wagons and they were
great cars. I have my Fox wagon with its 16 valve gas engine for grins. I
can't see how a Fox Wagon offers anything over a Dasher wagon. My very next
project is to put a Turbo and intercooler on my 1.6 turbo block that has
squirters and is now in my Dasher wagon. It is due for a timing belt and we
will see what the turbo does for it. It has a Quantum diesel 9 Q 5 speed
tranny and is the only VW diesel that I have owned that I would call a true
50 mpg car. Most I had to baby and be extremely careful with my driving to
hit 50 mpg but with this Dasher almost every tank is 50mpg. With bad
conditions slightly less and when I'm heading east on a freeway with a
booming tail wind I have hit over 60mpg.
Perhaps for a small displacement diesel I should have a 1.5 crank
de-stroked and buy special rods to use 1.6 turbo pistons in a 1.6 turbo
block then put on a good turbo and intercooler?

I'd love to put a petite, sub 1.6L diesel in the Fox, but I can fetch
the Suzuki G10T here in the states for ~$500 complete. They were used in
the Chevy Sprint/Sprint Metro, Chevy/Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Forsa (Canada)
and Geo Metro engines from the mid eighties to the early 90s, so they're
available. I can still get parts for them locally, too.
