[Vwdiesel] Taurus disk brakes

I know this isn't a VW but this problem may have something in common with TDI's with ABS & rear disk brakes. Brakes on wife's 1997 Taurus started making a metal to metal scraping sound when applying the brakes. Car is a few hundred miles shy of 100,000 miles. Amazingly the front brakes showed lots of brake pads left & so did the right rear pads as well as the outer left rear pad BUT the left rear inside pad was worn down to the metal. Replaced all rear pads with new ones. I believe the pads should wear evenly but on the left rear, they didn't. Do I need to replace the left rear caliper or is there a simpler solution? The rear disk brakes also incorporate a parking brake & there is a tool from NAPA #3355 (for some GM vehicles & all 1987 to date Fords with rear disk brakes) that you need to rotate clockwise, the rear brake pistons to make room for the new pads. You can't push them in like the front disk brake pistons.
