[Vwdiesel] Blow-by test?

Mine's an 82 n/a 2 door 5 speed. Actually I didn't run it at all last
winter... at least not in the coldest months. It's originally a Wisconsin
car and the previous owner bypassed the thermoswitch for the glow plugs.
Bought it on Ebay last summer and drove it back to PA. I'm sure it needs at
least to have the fuel filter replaced but it starts ok now in the summer.
Smokes when you start it and stomp on it, but don't they all? Shifting is
more like a Ouija board than an actual mechanism, with 1st being a treat to
find sometimes. Recently came back from a 200 mile weekend drive without
issue. It will do 75 MPH on level ground, albeit eventually. It's just an
ugly beige Rabbit, beat all to hell, and leaks oil like a sieve. Looks like
crankcase seals. No A/C. No headliner. Roof previously caved in due to
Wisconsin snows. Interior is shot, except by some miracle the dash is not
cracked. Only the passenger door lock works and the driver door hinge is
shot. Rear hatch is from a different car and is white. Oh, and the floor
pans are rusting away, especially on the "frame" supports directly under the
seats that go forward to the point where the control arms attach to the car.
Probably more undercoating in spots than metal. It's this rust I'm worried
about for PA inspection. My initial PA inspection was lax to say the least.
Aside from all that car runs and drives ok. Injection pump and all struts
are less than 3 years old. But I'm not in a position to put a great deal of
money into it, so if a major repair is required to pass it I will more
likely sell it.
