[Vwdiesel] Is my transmission FUBAR? Pushrod Bushing and pushrod

I finally got around to working on my terribly-slipping clutch. It seems there was very little brake material left, even the springs in the disc had started to rub on the plate that the pushrod pushes!
Anyway, I had gotten a new pushrod bushing and seal. I remembered a mechanic once telling me that they simply push the old one further in with the new one, and as long as that hasn't been done before it works fine.
So, I go to do this. Judging by the looks of things, I went on the assumption that there wasn't another bushing further in. I was able to push it in far enough I think, but then damaged the seal when installing that.
Then, the bushing got damaged while removing the seal! DOH! I was able to get the pushrod through the bushing and transmission, but it caught on that bushing and didn't push back easily so there is a good chance it wouldn't let the clutch fully release.
So, now I have got to at least remove the new, damaged bushing. Any ideas on getting that bushing out?
Also, it appears that the pushrod wasn't fully releasing, judging by the difference in tips. (One looks like it had been wearing against the push plate.)
Do you think the clutch adjustment will take care of this, or do I need to find a new pushrod?
