Hi Bill;
I ran a 2.5 inch straight pipe on my Rabbit pickup which had a 1.6
turbo engine. It worked great and didn't seem too loud for me. Diesels like
free exhaust. I have a 2 inch system with a short oval muffler on my 81
Dasher station wagon with an N/A 1.6 and it is a consistant 50 mpg + car
when run at around 65 mph. Your turbo will scroll up sooner with a freer
exhaust. It is actually amazing how much of the bark a turbo in itself
removes from a diesel exhaust. A lot of the big diesel trucks around here
are running twin 5 inch straight pipe stacks on their twin turbo Cat and
Cummings engines with 500 plus horsepower. A VW diesel with only a turbo to
modify the exhaust is going to be only a whisper compared to the pipes I
hear on new Harley motorcycles.

I don't have any recommendation for a muffler but I was wondering whether a
straight pipe would make the car to loud. Has anyone tried it?The Argosy
motorhome I once owned had a straight pipe but had an Isuzu turbodiesel
engine. I was told the turbo quieted the exhaust to the point where it was
legal. Would a straight pipe help or hinder fuel economy? My Isuzu powered
26 foot Argosy motorhome got fantastic MPG, up to 17 MPG. It had a Chevy 1&
1/2 ton chasses with a GM turbo-hydromatic 400 coupled to a gear vendor 2
speed auxiliary transmission. However some engines need some amount of back
pressure to function most efficiently. Do our na & TD diesels need this or
is the less back pressure the better? It has been my experience that diesel
mufflers tend to last indefinably in the Calif. environment. Comments?
