get the special tool, its worth it.
www.metalnerd.com is my suggestion, but im located in Penn and prefer to
support local business whenever possible. Yes, they make stuff right here in
Pennsylvania.

in the meantime,you'll need 2 people, one at the shift rod lock bolt/nut
under the car, and one holding the shifter in place. i I remember correct,
start with the shifter in neutral at about where you would start to engage
second gear and work from there, tightening/loosening the locknut till youre
satisfied.
if youve not done shifter bushings, even the special tool will only make it
tolerable at best.
