I have found a notation in my old bentley that says non-turbo diesels from
89 up (and all Mk3s) are equipped with the altitude and load compensators.
They do not operate below 3000 ft ASL.
Cut-in, 4100 ft, cut-out, 3000ft ASL. By that time your NA, non-turbo is
gasping for air, and reduced to about half its sea level horsepower.
Fortunately, for the enviro - mental quirks, it will have been made clean,
even though it will have trouble getting up a 10% grade.
The contraption is more complicated than I thought, as it purports to
"adjust the injection rate" on a proportional basis, to "lean" it out at
higher altitudes, and if it has gone lean at a mountaintop, and you put your
foot in it to pass someone, the solenoid will operate to give you full, max
smoke, injection to execute the maneouver (good luck!) in effect, cancelling
the good work done by the "lean" control.
In your picture, it is a cute little assembly of aneroids, tubing, switch,
wires, etc, and Teutonic ingenuity, worthy of being cleaned up and mounted
on Mahogany under a bell-jar, for the mantlepiece.
It won't do a thing for you in Ohio.
Do you live near Cleveland? I have a brother who operates a horse parlor
near Hinkeley on river road.
