That spread out over even 100K miles is still less then $.01 per mile.
The most a diesel could save would be $.02 a mile considering the price
difference of $.60 and 30mpg vs. 45mpg and @100k miles $2,000.
Paying someone to replace the cam is going to take ALL of the savings
($2,000).
Doing it yourself you could save a few hundred.
Still I like diesel, but I wouldn't try to make a case for the economy of
it. (unless you can put farm diesel in it :)
I had an '01 Ford Escape; I bought new and at 92k miles when I sold it; it
had never been in the shop except for tires, brakes and oil changes.
