Lets all have our opinions but lets be nice as well. We don't need to get into who's nation is better or mechanics or anything else. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Yes american mechanics can be a little "get er done" attitude without thinking first but that is how most of use are raised and how a lot of things are built to be worked on like that back in the day. In the end it takes all walks of life to make the world go round. Yes I am an engineer as well and understand the frustration both with some mechanics out there (which is why I am on this forum so I can work on my own things and am self taught for the record, father couldn't change spark plugs) and have the frustration of how the engineers designed things. Sometime the manufacturing cost over rules improving the design. What is the easiest to mass produce to fit the most cars with out changing much tooling as you improve and redesign things. And the fact that the person that designed the water pump might never know what the engine looks like it is meant for the the water pump housing engineer might not know what any more then the block of the engine looks like. So many pieces to the pie anymore.
I didn't even thing about that VW doesn't recommend the pulleys being replaced every time but I will always do it. Only takes one thing to fail the engine. And the honda we are working on will hit valves if not installed right. The car started, we just need to put some covers on and the wheel and we are done.
This weekend I will help with my brothers intake cleaning on his BEW PD engine and put the EGR block off plates and the Crank Case Vent oil catch on like my car has now on it. I found out the hard way that the radiator spring clamp tools are almost needed for this job. I did it without but bought 3 different styles after that so I wouldn't ever have to worry about it again.
