[Vwdiesel] 82 Rabbit n/a into an 88 Fox?

Fox gassers have a very tall 4 speed. I have one installed in my 1981 Dasher
diesel 4dr. I put over 8000 miles on it on a trip back east last spring. The
Fox four speed isn't quite as tall as a 1.6 Quantum turbo diesel 5 spd but
almost. I have a Quantum turbo diesel 5 speed in my 1981 Dasher wagon and it
is nice. With the 88 Fox donor he should have everything he needs between
the two cars to put together the swap. Get on it with a friend and it should
be done in a weekend. Be sure to remember to have a pilot bearing in the
diesel crank if there isn't one there already. The other thing is to take
the down pipe off the exhaust manifold on the Fox and be sure the reducer
plate is out. VW stuck a reducer plate in the exhaust so that the gas engine
in the Fox which actually had 1/2 point more compression would produce 5
less horsepower than the more costly Golf. Between the two cars you should
have about everything you need to make the swap. I guess I would buy new
exhaust gaskets and down pipe gasket, a pilot bearing, a intake strip and if
the clutch in the Fox looks fairly decent probably just a new clutch disc. I
probably forgot something but it should all be there for a super easy swap.
I have done one a little harder having put a 16 valve Gas engine and
a quantum 5 speed in a 90 Fox wagon. Have fun.

Engine is basically the same but like Tad said, you have to be sure your
motor
mounts are compatable. I THINK all the 1.6 diesels have the same mount
points
that you would need. 1.5 would be iffy but be sure. A Fox 5 speed
shouldn't be
hard to find, gasser gearing tends to be a bit lower than diesel but not
all were.
Roger probably has the tranny number vs gear ratios on his site and one or
two
people here on the list have done the diesel to Fox swap already. :-)
