[Vwdiesel] early automatics

I for one have thoroughly enjoyed reading the "history of the automatic
transmission"... In spite of how much I despise them. I still think the
roads would be a safer place today if everyone was required to pass their
driving test in a car with a manual transmission... Like in Germany.
Thanks,
Joe

Gerald Hughet, you are quite correct in your description of that Chrysler
semi-automatic transmission. I am not trying to hide my age of 76 & since a
lot of the contributors are much younger, & would appreciate this info as I
think we are all car buffs with a particular love for diesel engines & cars.
If not interested in this info, please let me know. That 1949 Chrysler New
Yorker was a "flat head or "L" head inline 8. Until Chrysler came out with
the overhead valve Hemi V-8 in 1951, all Chryslers including Plymouth, Dodge
& DeSoto were L head 6 engines except the Saratoga & New Yorker which were
straight 8's. I think Dodge offered a straight 8 around 1932. Also, of
interest, the 1933 & 1934 Plymouths had modern independent front suspension
but reverted to a straight front axel from 1935 thru 1938.
