[Vwdiesel] glowplug relay

Anyone have a suggestion why my glow plugs won't heat up. The fusible link is OK, and the plugs are new 1 month old. If I connect directly from the battery, the car starts right up. It's an 86 Jetta TD. I just got the page out of the manual and will do some of the checks, but was hoping somebody had a good idea were to look without me having to twist my body into a pretzel under the dash.
