On the TDI's you can get a vag-com cable with some Ross Tech software that you can basically program your car. Everything from the locks to the country that it thinks it is in to disabling the airbags and other alarms. It also can read codes that even the OBD 2 can't read. It makes it easier to modify the car as you can just plug a tune into the computer but yes it could get to be an electrical nightmare someday in the future. Even the injectors are run from the computer on my car. Simple things like a really hard start can set codes of of the cars. 

With the Audi. I had to cheat. Kind of cool to know that though. 

Also my brother finally got to start the air cooled VW engine in the 140 JD. He said it was so loud it vibrated the snow off the roof of the shop. He wants to put mufflers on it the thing it is so loud. He had to wait so long to start the thing since it has been so cold there. It was 50 above today here.
