I recall my very first "motor vehicle" was a home made go-kart my dad and I made which was 
powered by an old Reo lawnmower engine.  Didn't have any sort of actual clutch, rather a 
loose v-belt and a tensioner pulley attached to a rod and handle up front that you pulled 
back on with your foot to tighten the belt and connect the engine to the drive wheel.  I 
think there was some sort of lever that actuated a brake that rubbed on one of the wheels 
to slow it down.  It was fun to drive around the end of the street.
