[Vwdiesel] Alternator belt adjustment

I had my alternator belt start squealing yesterday. I was planning to adjust
it this afternoon. I found the bolt and bushing where the adjustment bar
attaches to the water pump bracket missing. I have the type of alternator on
my 81' Caddy where the pivot bolt is on top, the adjuster bolt is underneath
but best reached from the top and the adjuster bar is attached even farther
underneath and closer to the engine block, all in a very tight space. What
can I use for a bushing in the adjuster bar to close the hole down to allow
the 8 mm bolt through. The hole in the bar looks like it is egged out on one
side. I'd prefer something like the proper bushing and fender washers on
both sides to keep the bushing in place and an extra long bolt with locking
nuts. Anyone ever have problems like this? How was it corrected?
