[Vwdiesel] how do I know I have a bad glow plug in newer TDI

Yeah, I talked to the guy about that too, but like you said, you won'think to look if a plug burns out.  I suppose if the car was starting you wouldn't notice, but it would suck to get caught on a cold snap.
