[Vwdiesel] finally made 50 mpg

Years ago I towed a Plymouth Sundance home to OK from Custer, SD with my 82 
1.6 NA. It's a long story, but anyhow I got 33mpg with it, as opposed to the 
54 or so I normally got.

I never exceeded 45 towing it, either. That was the Jetta's decision, not 
mine :(

I have found the biggest thing to getting better MPG is your foot and your 
foot alone. Taking any extra weight out helps and reducing any drag also 
helps but constant speed at a slower speed where the engine/turbo is the 
most efficient with the least amount of drag possible helps. During 
Thanksgiving 08 I drove the 750 mile trip home from Sheridan WY to near St. 
Cloud MN and got there on one tank at 58.5 mpg. I drove with the rpm at 2000 
the whole way in 5th gear. Took a long time. But we were going to get home 
in the middle of the night no matter how fast we drove because we left after 
work.

Then there was the time pulling a trailer with my fathers bike (the largest 
heaviest Harley they make) after his bike wreck in Elko NV back to MN (1500 
miles). I was doing 80 the whole way with the AC wide open (he was burning 
up from 12 broken bones) and my seat heater on high with the wife, dog, and 
all of our gear and his gear and we got 23 MPG. I didn't know a vw could get 
so low and it was the same car. I average the lower 40's though (town, 
interstate, and mountain roads). Not many flate 55 mph roads around here to 
get better mpg.
