I was gone for most of the month of June so finally got back to working on my Quantum. I sent my original IP back to a firm that advertises on eBay to rebuild injection pumps for $375 including shipping both ways. The rebuilt IP arrived while I was on vacation. Yesterday I removed the old IP but haven't installed the rebuilt IP as I decided to test the injectors, which are easier to R&R with the IP removed. The #1 injector appears defective as it starts to spray a steady stream at 1000 psi but the other 3 popped off at 2000 psi, but was unable to observe the spray pattern. This is the first time I used the injector tester I bought a few months ago from the "Mercedes Source". Each injector seems to have its own serial number but found the following markings common to all the injectors" "060" enclosed in an oval circle, then 149 155 BAR. Then another number, "KCA30536/4".. I was thinking of using the injectors off my 1980 Dasher diesel parts car but those injectors were marked with different numbers & marked at "130 Bar" as opposed to the "155 Bar" on the Quantum's. Also, two of the Dasher's injectors appeared to be defective & the other two popped off at 1600 psi.
I wonder if I should try to repair the one defective Quantum injector, replace all 4 with new ones, or take all 4 of them out to a commercial shop to be rebuilt? The Mercedes Source tester came with a bunch of shims & other parts to rebuild the injectors. Instead of testing the injectors with diesel fuel, I decided to use "diesel purge" fluid since I felt this would do a better job of cleaning the injectors. Comments appreciated.
