'bout time we had an update...
Here's something that may help you:
This last year my car has been getting harder to start; one or 2 or even 3
revs to fire up. I'd tried changing batteries, incase they were a little
weak, but no real improvement.
This week things came to a head after a fortnight of worsening, slow, lumpy
starting and I actually needed a tow start. Immediate firing up, after about
10ft of tow!
I'd checked plugs and fuelling. The engine is suffering from blowby, and I
have the kit ready for a re-ring. I've been putting it off for several
years, as it has always been a good starter, and a smooth if noisy idling,
but quiet cruising.
Sorry I've digressed slightly...
Yesterday I took out the starter and split it.
I found that the insides were saturated with oil from numerous valve cover
leaks over the years.
Bushes were on the low side and two had twisted slightly over the years. It
all cleaned up though and I gently filed the case to block contact points,
and added the missing nuts to the support bracket, which also acts as an
earthing strap IMO.
I cleaned the earth terminal on the gearbox, and the battery holder
earthpoint for good measure. Battery terminals and their clamps are clean.
Because the diesel starter motor is bigger than the gasser one, it is a bit
of a fiddle to get the starter back in, but harder still was finding the
push on terminal on the solenoid, once the main high current wires had been
bolted on, so do that push-on one first...
Finally, I got to start the car. The starter turns the engine over so fast
that it is only a fraction of a turn to start.
So, Bill, maybe cleaning the starter and the current circuit, will solve
your starting issue...
