[Vwdiesel] TDI BEW intake manifold flapper

What the heck is that flapper thing near the head on the intake manifold on my 04 golf BEW engine? Does it hurt to take it out? Also, any ideas to have a catch jar for the crank vent hose. Seems that adds most of the oil mist into the intake and I have hear of adding a catch on the ALH engine but not the BEW. In the middle of the timing belt and while I was there I decided to clean the intake system and add a EGT and boost gauge.
