[Vwdiesel] steering shaft bearing

I just had to take my steering wheel off again tonight to replace the ing. switch again.

It is not that hard.  From what I have seen, that is a 2 part bearing that is pressed into the lock collar, but if you take it apart you may be able to see a way to get the lower bearing back in the lock collar.

The first time I tried to remove the steering wheel I had trouble getting the brown rubber like collar off and had to separate the column itself, not hard, just time.

to get the brown collar off that may be keeping your lock collar on just remove the 6mm hex bolt and give it a few whaps up-ward to loosen the brown collar above it.

Sunday, while messing around with the glow plug relay, I found a bearing on
the steering wheel shaft just above the U-joint where the steering linkage
changes direction and goes through the floor. I slid the bearing up the
shaft and pressed it into the tube surrounding the shaft. I don't expect it
to stay there. The bearing looked like it was in good shape. Has anyone used
a hose clamp on the steering shaft (or some other securing device) to hold
the bearing in place between the shaft and the tube?

I'd really prefer to not separate the steering linkage for a replacement.
