Hi Stephen;
I would be ready to purchase a new ( used?) short block. I would
believe that your block is probably cracked from the bolt hole as well as
striped. It is a relatively common problem with 1.6 blocks to crack at the
bolt holes, usually because they weren't properly cleaned before installing
new stretch head bolts. I use Raceware head studs. Expensive but they use
normal torque values and are reusable.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] New Headgasket and Headbolt Issues
Okay....
Put a new headgaset on, the 10th headbolt stripped out, engine runs but
there is coolant in the oil.
So....I am going to purchase a new headgasket and ARP studs, but I will need
to ream out the 10th bolt hole and put a helacoil in.
Any recommendations on what else I should do? I really wanted to finish
this, but the coolant in the oil seals the need to re-do the head gasket.
