[Vwdiesel] Brakes?

Yeap, you can get a crack in the large plastic pipe going to the booster.
It may not be visable until you remove it a twist it around a bit.
Also, the connector at the top of the vacuum pump on 2 of my cars has come lose.  It just sort of sits in there.
I have glued it back in with epoxy, but it did not seem to be effecting braking that much.
You may want to check that as well.

Thanks for all the replies.. Lucky for me it's not my only ride, so I'll dig
into it this weekend.  And I'll keep my eyes open for one of those vane type
pumps.

Does your vacuum pump have a spaceship on the side,[a diaphragm type] or is 
it a small felow with a pipe coming out of the top of  the lid?[Vane type. 
If the latter, then check your sump oil level. This can suffer if low. 
Almost indistructible otherwise.

Older style can have a split diaphragm.

Also look for leak in pipe to booster
