Hi Bill:
I have a friend who has a shop that works on European cars, Jaguars,
BMW, Mercedes, Audi and VW's. His big cravat is that ONCE A LUXURY CAR,
ALWAYS A LUXURY CAR! ! ! If it cost big bucks when it was new parts and
labor will be big bucks when it is 15 + years old and the wear gremlins
sneak in. You have been working with 80's vintage VW Rabbits, Dashers and
Quantams. Parts are cheap and the cars are relitivly simple. Graduate to the
90's European luxury cars and you will probably need to find a good
mechanic and a much fatter wallet to keep the machines on the road.

I may have a chance to trade one of my collector cars for a 1996 Mercedes
E300 diesel with 168,000 miles on it, reputedly in good shape. Is this a
good or bad year for that model? Anything in particular I should watch out
for that could spell expensive repairs in the near future? One member in the
past suggested that the years 1985 & 1987 were the best years for Mercedes
diesels.
