An update on my experience with this new gage. The gage is showing an average MPG of around 27 MPG. The first fill up showed 31 MPG & the 2ed fill up 25 MPG as I refueled with the car while parked at an angle with the gas cap at the highest level, & could get more fuel in the tank. Otherwise a pocket of air prevents a true fill up. When I run an instant MPG read out I can get anywhere from 8 MPG to 160 MPG. The 160 MPG shows up if I put the car in neutral & coast to a stop. If slowing with the car still in top gear, it shows around 100 to 120 MPG but if I shift into 3rd gear using the engine to slow down without using my brakes, it shows around 50 MPG. If this gage reads correctly, it tells me that increased RPM, even though your foot is off the gas, results in more fuel consumption. I can see from this how, driven properly, a Prius would get much better MPG if you slow gradually so you don't use your real brakes but only the regeneration of energy portion of your braking to slow you down & the engine shuts down completely.
