  If you saw it with headlights behind you then it usually looks w orse 
than it is otherwise.  Possibly due for an oil change?  It's not 
unusual to notice stuff you didn't notice before, after a big 
problem arises, like your alt fiasco.
  Most auto parts chains can scan your CEL, if you get near one.  
Good for peace of mind.
