[Vwdiesel] installing main crank seal??

Okay, okay, I've been STALLING on the 91 eco since I snapped a head bolt
in the block last Jan. Bolt is out (thanks to a welder friend), head is
rebuilt (Estey's auto in Anchorage), intermediate shaft seal replaced
(not too bad for my first time). Gotta get it driving for a Fairbanks
road trip in 2 weeks (power and economy!).
I'm not so good with installing seals, and am hesitant to take on the
front main crank seal.
I've got everything off, and the front main crank seal is staring at me.
Just a tiny bit of oil collected at the bottom, inner seal looks good.
I kinda want to leave it alone, but would feel silly if Ive got it this
far without making sure it's "right."
Planning on drilling a pilot hole and putting a couple little screws in
there to pull it.
** What is the best way to install the seal? **
I've seen on the GTD forums a way to use an old crank sprocket and some
washers to press it in. But I would have to grind out a sprocket to fit
it on (not a big deal, but..) And what's the deal with the little bit
of milk-jug plastic to keep the lip from flipping? Just roll it in
there with a little pressure while pressing?
Or should I go with the standard big socket and some tapping (worked for
intermediate shaft)?
My mechanic (who I usually use for pressing things in and out) pulls the
carrier and installs it that way, I've heard this isn't the best since
the carrier isn't necessarily lined up with the crank?
Should I put assembly lube all over the seal?
Thanks!
