The thermostat housing (so called) has different orientations depending on the application of the diesel engines. Some think the old style "metal" elbows are more durable than the later plastic, but VW went to the plastic for a reason (external corrosion possibly?) and plastic is all there is available aftermarket.
You can look at various online sources to see pix of the thermostat housings. www.dieselvw.com is a good one. Or use www.vagcat.com to see the parts blow-out for your particular engine/application. (You'll have to open a username/password but that is easy.) Find one that matches and then, using the part number, check out www.napaonline.com. When I went through this with my 1.6NA rabbit diesel, I found NAPA to be a good quality STANT brand (with metal inserts at each of the two bolt holes) for all of $2.33.
