180 bar is high, and pump longevity would start to suffer I would think.
You're probably right on the 3 vs 8 thing.
I ran a 1.6D at 155bar years ago, starts were a tad better in the cold
(-40C). I think it made some improvement in economy too, but that was a
long while ago. If memory serves, I set them to 15b over turbo spec, which
should be 155 and ran a tad more advance to account for the delay in
injector opening at that pressure.

I think it was a typo error, or someone's eyes fading and seeing an 8 where
it was really a 3...
Perhaps a comment from Farmer Joe or Val, or Sandy would seal it.
