You could always just put a block plate in for the EGR at least for a little bit while you disconnect the cooler lines. You will get a EGR code but it can be cleared off once things are hooked back up if you choose to do so. That way you for sure wouldn't fry anything.
The PD tools are only $70. The ALH tools are $222. I would ship you mine if you you weren't across a boarder and if my brother didn't have the tools but it is hardly worth it for the cheap tools. Look on Ebay. I found mine shipped for $40. I STRONGLY advise getting the VAG COM to check cam timing and you will use it periodicly through out the cars history. I would do the brake fluid change. Clutch runs off the brake fluid so it needs to be bleed as well. 99% of the people use a motive power bleeder which pressurizes the system. I have heard if you do it the old way and you push the brake pedal all the way in it can ruin the seals and the clutch is really hard to do without it as well. As a side benefit it works with all the VW's as well and it is a one man show then. If you happen to get air in the system you need the VAG COM to run the abs to bleed the air out. Get some radiator spring clamp tools BEFORE starting the intake cleaning. I did it with just a pliers and it sucked. I went and got the proper tooling afterward (no one in town sold the tools and radiator shops were closed on the weekends). Depending on what you are buying idparts.com has most of the things you will need and depending on the amount you buy you get a discount. dieselgeek.com is good for parts as well. Kermatdi.com,

Another way to remove the spring clamps I have seen is to take an exhaust clamp and reverse it and it will spread the clamp and hole it in place. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4145172-help-with-exhast
