I've always used dielectric grease on automotive connectors to reduce corrosion.  Never had any type of contact issues.
 
Anyway, I removed the battery ground cable and found the woven copper had all corroded green (hard to see that in the shed where the tractor is stored).  I've made up a new battery ground cable and will see how that works.

  Thus DIE-electirc grease, makes the electicity die.  At least that was 
how 
I finally remembered whether it was a conductor or an insulator...
