I think you can connect the hoses together with a barb to not have the lift pump affect anything and then hook the lines after the fuel filter straight up to the DP bottle some way and have the return going into the bottle as well. You want to run it straight through it and not put in the tank. 

I have read that using things like Stanadyne you don't really need to run DP through as it keeps things cleaned out but if you don't run something like that then it doesn't hurt to run DP through it. I do it since my car is older then 07 which is when the ULSD took affect.
