  Simpler and safer (no chance of getting stranded without fuel) to 
just fill the tank, drive at least 1/3 of a tank then refill to the same 
level (amount of kick-off of the nozzle, push the button until actually 
full, whatever) then use those numbers.  Only reason to run a tank 
empty really, is to see where E REALLY is on the gauge (my Mustang 
was a good needle width above the E mark) or to see how many 
gallons the tank really holds.  Most German tanks really do hold what 
the book says, most American cars I've checked don't.  Porsche tanks 
and gauges seem to be the most accurate overall.  The Passat tank 
is accurate but the gauge is never right in between F and E.  :-P
